Here at Oaklawn Church of God, we have a tagline that we’ve kind of given the church for a while now called “City on a Hill”, and it made me think of the image of being a light on the hill. It’s kind of like a lighthouse. A lighthouse that’s up on a high point, usually on a cliff face or harbor of some sort. It provides a light that cuts through the darkness. It cuts through the storms. It provides directions for those who need it. But not only direction, it provides protection. A lighthouse is so invaluable because it saves lives for those who are trying to find a place to dock their ships. The lighthouse tells them “This is where you need to go”, or “This is where you need to avoid”. It welcomes them in.
The lighthouse is a powerful tool, and it’s only run by a couple of people. It doesn’t require 1000 people to make a lighthouse any less or more effective. In some cases, it’s literally run by the one person who lives there. It isn’t the number of people that makes the lighthouse so powerful. It is powerful because it is a source of light. For us, that source of light is Christ. If we let Christ be the light on our little city on a hill, then that light can reach far beyond what we physically can. So never be discouraged by our size or perceived lack of ability.
Remember, even that one remote lighthouse has saved thousands of lives and hundreds of ships. We can do the same. Not because of our own ability, but because of the ability of Christ who empowers us.
Let’s be the Light of the World. Let’s be the City on a Hill.
